1. What is the difference between translation and interpretation?
Translation deals with the written word. It is a process whereby a document drafted in one language is rewritten in one or more other languages. All businesses operating internationally require translation services. Translation companies often also assist with interpretation – a process whereby a person listens to someone speak in one language (the source) and then accurately expresses what was said in another language (the target).
2. What are your rates?
Reputable translation agencies know that every client has different needs, which can range from a couple of simple pages to complex, classified technical documents. We at Dussault Translation Ltd. strive to offer our clients translation services tailored to their specific needs. Rates for document translation or interpretation services are subject to such factors as the type of material, the complexity of the text and the timelines within which the translation must be produced. 3. How long does it take to translate different types of documents from one language into another?
Dussault Translation Ltd. provides accurate document translation services, regardless of the complexity of the material, within reasonable timelines. These are discussed and mutually agreed upon with the clients at the onset. Documents of 1,500 words or less can usually be translated within one or two business days. If the material is more extensive, additional time will be required. If you need your documents urgently, we will strive to accommodate your needs. Please keep in mind that all rush jobs are subject to a higher fee.
4. What is meant by "source" and "target" languages?
The "source" language is the original language in which the document was drafted – or, in the case of interpretation, in which the material was verbally expressed. The "target" language is the language in which the material (written or spoken) must be rendered. For example, if you have materials in English that you would like translated into Spanish, the source language is English and the target language is Spanish.
5. Why are some documents translated into English first?
If neither your source nor your target language is English, you may be told that the process will involve a double translationl.
For example, if you require a document to be translated from German into Swahili, it is unlikely that we will have a single translator who speaks both of those languages to a professional degree. Usually, our staff speak English and one or two other languages, but it is our policy that their native language to be the non-English language they specialize in. It is for your benefit that Dussault Translation Ltd. seeks out two professionals to approach such a task. We are determined to provide you with the highest quality work.
6. What is certification, and do I need it?
Not every document translation service is subject to certification. Dussault Translation Ltd. will certify, at the client’s request, that its translators have provided a true and faithful translation from one language into another.
7. What is notarization, and do I need it?
Notarization involves an additional charge, as it is provided by a Notary Public (and not by the translation agency). A translator must swear before the Notary Public that she/he is fluent in both languages required for the translation, is a translator for Dussault Translation Ltd. and has accurately translated the specified document.
This service is usually required for any official documents required by consulates and immigration authorities (e.g., passports and visas), for divorce proceedings (e.g. birth and marriage certificates), legal and educational authorities (e.g. transcripts), and sometimes highly technical professional papers in the medical, engineering, and/or chemistry fields.
8. Can we still do business if I'm not based in Toronto?
Absolutely! Many clients of Dussault Translation Ltd. are international companies who do not have offices in Toronto or whose head office is located elsewhere. Our agency provides global document translation services, thanks to the digital nature of our business. We welcome clients, large and small, from all over the world. All you need is access to email or a fax machine! We will send you a hard copy at your request, although this may be subject to additional courier costs. Just tell us what you need, and we will provide it.
9. What if my documents are sensitive and require the highest security?
Dussault Translation Ltd. treats any client material with the highest degree of confidentiality. We will provide you with translators who have obtained top secret clearance and meet all government security requirements, both in Canada and the United States.
Our translation company uses only state-of-the-art security methods for email and data storage. All of our computers are triple-protected to ensure your material is secure. Dussault Translation Ltd. also has an alarm-protected vault to protect and store your hard copies and media, if required, for your peace of mind. Your information is never shared and your privacy is our utmost priority. Our intent is to establish and nurture a long and successful business relationship with you, our clients.
10. Why is it paramount for a translation agency to have Professional Liability coverage?
No one is ever completely protected from mistakes. Translators who do not carry proper Professional Liability coverage can put your business at risk. Their professional mistakes, errors and omissions can have serious and sometimes long-term effects on companies. For instance, an error in the translation or interpretation of medical materials could have life or death consequences for the patient. An inaccuracy in the translation of legal documents could lead to costly and prolonged litigation. The lack of familiarity with the technical jargon of a specific field can lead to an improper translation of highly complex manuals and cause accidents, or even catastrophes. Dussault Translation Ltd. is a fully certified and insured international translation company, which has successfully been serving clients since 1950. We have frequently been asked to correct professional mistakes and omissions made by other translation agencies. Regrettably, there is no law in place requiring every translation company to acquire Professional Liability Insurance.
Dussault Translation Ltd. strongly cautions you against using the services of translation companies lacking proper Professional Liability coverage. Professional Liability Insurance, also known as Errors & Omissions Insurance, is a must for any reputable translation company that has its clients’ best interests at heart. The simple fact that a translation company has acquired such coverage and is fully protected speaks volumes about its professional reputation and its vested interest in its clients. Professional Liability coverage means that the company has been fully inspected and deemed to be a low risk. For clients, this means that they can expect the highest standards of service.
